2023 Annual Meeting of International Advisory Committee, Department of Chemistry

On Sept. 27, the International Advisory Committee of Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University held its annual meeting in the Main Building . Among the attendees are three academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Prof. Jinpei Cheng, Prof. Xi Zhang and Prof. Meixiang Wang, members of Department Affairs Committee including Prof. Lei Liu (Department Chair), Huaping Xu, Ying Yu and Hao Zhang, members of International Advisory Committee, including the Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Fraser Stoddart, Prof. Alexis Bell from UC Berkeley, USA, Prof. Steven Boxer—Dean of the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University, Prof. Herbert Mayr from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, and Prof. Vivian Wing-Wah Yam from the University of Hong Kong, as well as over 10 representatives from the Department of Chemistry.

This meeting was hosted by Prof. Lei Liu. To begin with, he shared the progress of the Department of Chemistry in the construction of new buildings/lab space, the career development of young faculties, the promotion of international reputation, the development of postdoctoral researcher team, and the joint funding with enterprises. He also introduced the efforts the department has made to address the suggestions from the committee. Next, Lei Liu briefed the attendees on the overall situation of the Department of Chemistry, especially the research directions and the updates in research in the last two years.

In the discussion session, the committee and the faculty members exchanged opinions and provided suggestions on the strength and weakness of the research in the department and the strategies in resource allocation in their institutes.

After the annual meeting, faculty members from various research institutes in the department presented their research work. The IAC members also gave seminars to students and faculty members in department of chemistry and other department in the university.

Founded in Oct., 2021, the International Advisory Committee, Department of Chemistry aims to provide strategic advice and intellectual support for disciplinary strategic planning, international talent cultivation, international evaluation and collaboration, and to help the Department establish an international resource network for long-term development and international reputation and influence.
