International Year of Chemistry: China-Germany Chemical Symposium

2011 is International Year of Chemistry (IYC2011). Meanwhile, one of the most renowned chemistry journals in the world, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.  As part of the activities for IYC2011 in China, also as part of 50 years celebrations to mark the special occasion of Angewandte Chemie International Edition, A grand symposium was held on June 22, 2011 in the Lecture Hall of Tsinghua University Main Building, 9 outstanding chemists including 3 Nobel Prize owners gave wonderful lecture in the symposium, 400 researchers and students took part in this academic feast, including Dr. Michael Droescher (Presicent of Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker e. V. GDCh), Dr. Wolfram Koch (Executive Director of GDCh), Dr. Peter Goelitz (Chief editor of Angewandte Chemie International Edition), Prof. Lijun Wan (Vice director of Chinese Chemical Society, CCS for short),Prof. Zhenzhong Yang(Secretary-General of CCS), Prof. Si Yuan (Vice-president of Tsinghua University) and so on.

9 lecturers, Prof. Hartmut Michel (Nobel Prize 1988, Germany), Prof. Ryoji Noyori (Nobel Prize 2001, Japan), Prof. Barry Sharpless (Nobel Prize 2011, US), Prof. Helmut Schwarz (President of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, Germany), Prof. Alois Fuerstner (Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung, Germany), Prof. François Diederich (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), Prof. Qilin Zhou (Nankai University, China), Prof. Zhen Yang (Peking University, China), Prof. Xi Zhang (Tsinghua University, China), gave wonderful lecture on different chemical field, including structure of membrane proteins, chirally catalyzed synthesis, click chemistry, activation of C-H bond, catalytic reaction in full synthesis, synthesis of organic optoelectronic material, chiral spiro catalyst, full synthesis of effect component in schisandra and controllable self-assembly of superamphiphile. The creative research accomplishment, panoramic review of relative research fields and the experience of the lecturers inspired the audience, especially young people. About 50 young researchers were invited to display their research results on poster during the symposium, 6 of them who showed excellent result or gave wonderful display were chosen and were awarded by the diploma with the signature of all three Noble Prize owners.
