Prof. Zhigang Shuai in the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University was elected as Foreign Member of Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe) in the 2011 general meeting, based on the recommendation of the Academic Section (B4: Chemical Sciences) and the following peer review by the nomination committee of the Academy. Academia Europaea was founded in 1988 headquartered in London initialized by the Royal Society (UK). There are now about 2300 members consisting eminent, individual scholars covering the full range of academic disciplines that comprises the humanities, social, physical and life sciences as well as mathematics, engineering and medicine. (http://www.acadeuro.org) Prof. Zhigang Shuai has made significant scientific contributions in theoretical chemistry and its application to organic and polymeric optoelectronics materials, including quantum chemistry density matrix renormalization group theory, theoretical predictions of carrier mobility of organic material, path integral approach of the optical spectra and quantum efficiency of organic luminescent material as well as photovoltaic processes. His theoretical research showed that the internal quantum efficiency of polymer light-emitting diode could go far beyond the 25 percent limit predicted by the spin-statistics theorem in quantum mechanics.
