Prof. Guoan Luo Published the First English Monograph of Systems Biology for Traditional Chinese Medicine

Systems Biology for Traditional Chinese Medicine (John Wiley, ISBN: 978-0-470-63797-5, June 2012, 512 pages), was contributed by professors Guoan Luo, Yiming Wang and Qionglin Liang, in the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University. The Academician of China Academy of Engineering, former president of China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Prof. Yongyan Wang, prefaced for the book and gave high praise. As the first research monograph on traditional Chinese medicine internationally published by world-class academic publishers since the TCM Modernization Programme of China launched in 1996, this book has gotten good reputation from domestic and international communities.

In recent years, the research team composed by Professors Guoan Luo, Yiming Wang and Qionglin Liang have made good achievements in the study of systems biology for TCM and published more than 300 SCI articles. Their appealing work absorbed world-class academic publishers such as John Wiley & Sons, Inc. which decided eventually to publish their research monograph after an international peer-review process. Here are some representative comments given by the reviewers who responded to John Wiley's questionnaires: "The readers who concerns of TCM and pharmaceutical industry will benefit from the innovation of methodology and technology for the R&D of traditional medicine and botanical drugs, and the readers in the field of systems biology will also find fresh views and new insight proposed in this book"; "This book could help for readers to better understand the different treatment approaches to disease between western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. It could also help scientists and/or TCM practitioners who interest in TCM drug development to aware the existing modern scientific technologies and establish a better experiment design and strategy"; "This book will provide information of current sciences and technologies for the development of medicines, as well as their applications in studying traditional Chinese medicine. This kind of information is crucial for researchers and physicians in the field of traditional medicine and conventional medicine".

The book Systems Biology for Traditional Chinese Medicine describes how the latest methods in systems biology can be applied to TCM, providing a comprehensive resource for the modernization and advancement of TCM as well as general drug discovery efforts. It is the first comprehensive work to propose a system-to-system research methodology to study the interaction between TCM and the human body and its applications in drug research and development. This book not only opens a new pathway for the continued development of TCM, but also for systems biology. In addition, it fosters collaboration and discussion among Eastern and Western scientists by applying systems biology to TCM.
