SUMMARY

Prof. Omar Yaghi is a pioneering chemist whose research focuses on the synthesis, structure, and properties of inorganic and organic compounds, as well as the design and construction of innovative crystalline materials. He is internationally recognized for pioneering major classes of advanced materials, including Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), and molecular weaving. These materials possess some of the highest known surface areas and have enabled transformative applications in hydrogen and methane storage, carbon capture and conversion, water harvesting from desert air, and catalysis. Through his groundbreaking building block approach, Prof. Yaghi established the field of Reticular Chemistry, defined as “stitching molecular building blocks into extended structures by strong bonds,” revolutionizing the design and creation of materials with unprecedented diversity and functionality. Building on this foundation, he has pioneered AIMATRY (AI × Materials × Chemistry), an emerging research field that integrates artificial intelligence with materials science and chemistry to accelerate the discovery, design, and synthesis of new materials. AIMATRY aims to overcome the limitations of traditional trial-and-error approaches by developing AI-enabled tools that can predict material structures and properties, guide experiments, and dramatically shorten materials research and development cycles. His contributions to MOFs, COFs, molecular weaving, and AI-driven materials discovery have resulted in more than 300 scientific publications, receiving over 250,000 citations and an h-index exceeding 200, reflecting his profound impact on modern chemistry, materials science, and the future of AI-enabled scientific discovery.
